The 86th annual Academy Awards aired last night, bringing another award season to its end. This year’s ceremony, hosted by Ellen Degeneres, brought cheerful moments like: Lupita Nyong’o’s historic win on the 75th anniversary of Hattie McDaniel’s “Best Supporting Actress” win, and awkward moments like John Ridley’s intense acceptance speech for “Best Adapted Screenplay” for “12 Years A Slave” where he threw director Steve McQueen palm trees worth of shade.
The red carpet brought angelic moments like, Jada Pinkett- Smith’s peach Versace number and Camila Alves’ (Matthew McConaughey’s wife) pale pink Gabriela Cadena gown. We gushed over Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s public display of affection and fell in love all over again with Charlize Theron.
From Jennifer Lawrence falling on the red carpet to Cate Blanchett’s epic acceptance speech (“Suck it, Julia”), here are the most memorable moments of the night:
“12 Years A Slave” Writer John Ridley Gives Steve McQueen The Cold Shoulder
An overwhelming feeling of Black pride swarmed our insides when John Ridley became the second Black person to win an Oscar for “Best Adapted Screenplay” (Geoffrey S. Fletcher won for “Precious” in 2010) for “12 Years A Slave” but we were quickly cooled down when he threw massive shade at “12 Years A Slave” director Steve McQueen.
Ridley walked straight past McQueen without even cutting an eye-ball in his direction and didn’t even thank him in his overly intense acceptance speech. Rumor has it that McQueen and Ridley had a falling-out prior to the ceremony.
“My sources attributing John Ridley-Steve McQueen cold shoulder at Oscars tonight to dispute over screenplay credit,” tweeted Nikki Finke of The Hollywood Reporter.
Peep the snub, below:
Jada Pinkett-Smith Slays The Carpet (Like Shut It Down)
Yasss! We live!
Jada Pinkett-Smith completely stole the show when she and hubby/ “Best Picture” presenter Will Smith showed up the Academy Awards red carpet in this flowing Versace gown. While we’re still staring at the best dressed ensemble, folks noticed something different about Jada’s cheeks and think the starlet had plastic surgery to enhance them. (Take that one with a grain of salt).
She did that!
Darlene Love Snatched The Mic
The act of thanking God on stage might’ve gone out with ’90s interludes, but Darlene love took us to CHURCH when her film “20 Feet From Stardom” won the “Best Documentary” Award. Love thanked God and kept giving the praise with an A ccapella version of “His Eye Is On The Sparrow” during the acceptance speech. Half the room looked confused, but no one dared interrupt Darlene’s moment and she took all of the minutes she had to bask in her moment on stage (apparently one can play the music on you if you’re the one singing it!).

Lupita’s First Awards Season Got A Fairytale Ending…But Don’t Call Her Cinderella
Lupita Nyong’o kicked off Women’s History Month by cementing her name in the books as the seventh Black woman to win an Academy Award. Her Best Supporting Actress win for “12 Year’s A Slave” comes 75 years after Hattie McDaniel became the first Black woman to win an Oscar (Best Support Actress in 1939′s “Gone With The Wind”). The award season darling, who also kicked off the month celebrating her 31st birthday (March 1) with an Independent Spirit Award win, accepted her Oscar looking like a modern day Cinderella in a custom Prada gown and gold-and-diamonds Fred Leighton headband. “It’s a blue that reminds me of Nairobi, and so I wanted to have a little bit of home,” she told E! News of her gown.
The Kenyan-born actress also admitted she didn’t know what the Oscars were until she hit college, but during her awards acceptance speech it was clear the importance of the honor was not lost on her. “It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s and so I want to salute the spirit of Patsey for her guidance,” she said, referring to her “12 Years A Slave” character and women like her.
Lupita also thanked members of the cast and crew of her film, which became the first the first picture from a Black director to win top honors in the 86 years of the Academy Awards.
And Not A Single Care Was Given…
No one in the audience looked like they gave less of a damn about “Hollywood’s biggest night” than Whoopi. Between the “View” stars facial expressions when the camera panned to her, to that, er… “Wizard Of Oz” tribute outfit, it’s safe to say that Whoopi had not a care to give (and that’s putting it lightly). But since she’s one of the few entertainers — and only Black entertainer — to have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award so she gets an awards season pass for any foolery, off GP.

No, Seriously, Ellen: Kerry Washington Really Wanted That Pizza

Ellen’s awkward jokes timed up with Kerry Washington’s pregnancy cravings when the host mentioned ordering pizza and asked who wanted in. Kerry’s hand shot up almost immediately with her plum-colored lips quivering at the thought of a large special. Kerry tried desperately to get the hosts attention to no avail. Then Ellen returned to continue the joke with three pizzas in tow and even shouted-out the pregnant actress, but although she made it over to Kerry and even gave her a plate, Ellen got distracted and never actually gave Kerry that pizza.
Charlize Theron Is Super Amaze-Balls
Jada Pinkett-Smith may have snagged the “best dressed” award of the evening but, Charlize Theron wasn’t far behind. She stunned in a black Dior gown(of course she wore Dior, she’s totally their spokes model) with plunging neckline and invisible straps. If she didn’t reinvigorate your love for the “Snow White” actress, she charmed us all when she flubbed her line while presenting beside Chris Hemsworth.
“Oh is that my line,” she charmingly said while chuckling. We think so.

Jennifer Lawrence Can’t Walk
So apparently, Jennifer Lawrence can not walk. The “American Hustle” actress donned a red Dior gown to Oscars ceremony but quickly faded into the red carpet when she fell into it. How she managed to do so with crowds of people aiding her as she walked is actually quite impressive. Folks are starting to think she’s doing it on purpose…but hey, if she wants to be known for being clumsy so be it!
Cate Banchett’s Epic Acceptance Speech
Cate Blanchett is the epitome of elegance. She began her acceptance speech by genuinely thanking her competitors…except for Julia Roberts who she told #suckit. She used her peers’ attention to make a statement to those who think of women-centric films as niche. They are not, she said. “Audiences want to see them and in fact they earn money.” And if you haven’t yet been informed, “the world is round people.”
Brad & Angelina’s PDA
When Brad and Angelina arrived to the 2014 Academy Awards, they were dubbed the king and queen of the prom, and it’s just true. Brad may be 50, but he is still fine and Angeline Jolie, well she’s just the most gorgeous woman on this planet (outside of Halle Berry that is). Brad, who snagged an Oscar for his executive hand in “12 Years A Slave,” softly kissed and held his wife throughout the ceremony. it was adorable watching them interact with one another. It looks like they still in to each other like the first day they met!
