Hundreds Pay Their Respects To Christian Taylor

An Arlington, TX church was packed to capacity on Saturday afternoon to pay respects to 19-year-old Christian Taylor. Taylor was shot and killed on Aug. 7 by police who suspected him of burglary in a car dealership. However, locals remembered Taylor as a devout Christian and talented football star. The New York Times published a report today exposing the Supreme Court’s allowance of lawyers to use “neutral” (read: trivial) reasons to exclude people from joining juries. In fact, research shows that prosecutors in Louisiana, Alabama and North Carolina have excluded Black jurors at double or triple the rates of people from other races. The discrimination that is apparent to jury selection is now increasingly a concern as a public faith in the criminal justice system is dropping and cases of Black people dying of police neglect and violence have come to the forefront. Miami Police Union Condemns Woman For Videotaping Violent Arrest

Shenitria Blocker was fulfilling what she felt was her duty in using her smartphone to capture an arrest in Miami during which a black man was punched in the face by a police officer. The police then assaulted her in an attempt to grab her phone and intimidate her into deleting the footage. Blocker later posted the footage on a friend’s Facebook account, inciting a police investigation and a response from a Miami Police Union accusing her friend of posing with men posing with guns and feeding into negative views against law enforcement on social media. Bernie Sanders, the Democratic presidential candidate, spoke on NBC’s “Meet The Press” about the apology letter that was sent to Black Lives Matter activists. This summer, Sanders’ campaign events were interrupted by activists calling attention to police brutality and neglect against Black people. Sanders’ African American Outreach Leader, Marcus Ferrell, sent an email to the Black Lives Matter activists calling for a more formal meeting and saying: “We are hoping to establish a REAL space for REAL dialog between the folks on this email and our campaign.” However, Sanders is saying that the email was sent without his consent and that he felt it was unnecessary.
