Oversight In Uber’s Background Checks Allowed For Drivers With Criminal Records

Uber has been hit with a lawsuit claiming that the alternative taxi company has been misleading customers about the safeness of its service. It turns out that Uber’s background check company didn’t note the criminal past of 25 drivers who had provided thousands of rides to customers in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Now it is questioned as to whether Uber can and should be held to the same standard as taxi driving companies. Certain items for background checks like fingerprinting already isn’t a requirement by state law for prospective Uber drivers like it is for taxi competitors. A spokeswoman for the ride-hailing company has rebutted the lawsuit by saying that no background check is “100 percent foolproof.” Read more at the LA Times.

A recent study published in Lancet found that the longer people worked, the more likely they were to suffer from a stroke. The study followed over 530,000 patients that had no history of a stroke and over 600,000 that had no history of a coronary artery disease for seven to eight years. At the end, there were 1,700 strokes and 4,800 heart attacks recorded. In accounting for socioeconomic status, age and sex, it was summarized that working over 55 hours meant a whopping 33 percent increase in risk for stroke and 13 percent increased risk for coronary heart disease. Massive Arrests From Last Year’s Ferguson Protests Yields Charges Too Weak To Uphold In Court

A year after police officers in St. Louis County arrested swarms of people in Ferguson for participating in—or simply being present at—last year’s protests against Michael Brown’s death, hundreds are being served with bogus charges to justify their arrests.
These charges are being handed out even after the state prosecuting attorney and the city of Ferguson rejected the validity of these cases. Protestors are instead being targeted by the St. Louis County Counselor, an institution that protects the local police department in civil lawsuits. Talk about protecting your own self interest, smh.
Most of these people haven’t heard anything about these charges for over a year until now, and a good portion of these people don’t actually live in Ferguson. This means they would not only have to pay any relevant court fees, but they would also have to accommodate for travel costs to address the charges. Read more at the Huffington Post.
