Ferguson Offers Amnesty On Arrest Warrants

The city of Ferguson, MO is drastically changing its approach to addressing minor crimes after drawing criticism for rampant police brutality, neglect and over-criminalization of its marginalized residents. Ferguson is pulling back on thousands of arrest warrants it has issued for city violations while limiting imprisonment of residents unable to pay fines and court fees. Read more at the USA Today.

Black Students Are Expelled At Higher Rates Than Children Of Other Races

Black children are being dismissed at extremely high rates in comparison to other children in US classrooms. Though they only make up less than 25 percent of the student population in public schools, they account for almost half of those who are being suspended and expelled. These findings were pulled in a report from the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania as part of the Obama administration’s efforts to lower the number of dismissals and arrests in public schools. Massachusetts Family Is Horrified By Mistakenly Being Attacked By A SWAT Team

A young family in Worcester, MA has been traumatized after a SWAT Team erroneously invaded their home last week. The SWAT Team raided the home to fulfill a search warrant, but it was later revealed that the suspect no longer lived in the home at the time of the raid. The family’s attorney is criticizing the district attorney’s defense of the raid that the agents were using the best intelligence available, as the attorney is rebutting that the family’s rights were violated. Governor Charlie Baker has expressed his concern about the matter and has commissioned state police officers to investigate. Read more at The Root.

Smog in big cities like Lagos, Nigeria are accepted as a part of everyday life but the effects of air pollution is having severely damaging effects on residents and the environment. While people are becoming injured or are simply dying from inhaling deadly fumes from nearby power plants, emissions are changing the climate (specifically rainfall) along the coast of West Africa. Even worse, there isn’t enough research is being conducted on emissions from newer urban centers and their direct impact on weather systems, crops and public health. ISIS Allegedly Bombed An Ancient Temple in Palmyra Amid Syrian Conflict

A 2,000-year-old temple in Palmyra, Syria has literally been blow to bits by ISIS as an war tactic. Experts are unsure exactly when the attack occurred; Syria’s director-general believes the attack took place on Sunday but the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights states that the attack could have happened as early as a month ago. News on this bombing attack comes only days after Khaled al-As’ad, an 82-year-old archaeologist that worked in Palmyra, was beheaded in public.
