Obama Rings In Labor Day By Extending Paid Sick Leave

On Monday, President Barack Obama spoke before a union rally and breakfast in Boston to announce his executive order facing federal contractors to pay employees while on leave. The measure includes time off to care for sick relatives; it has yet to be said how much federal contractors would have to pay to follow suit with the order but the Labor Department says costs would be counteracted by better employee retention. Obama has signed other executive orders to improve the workplace including barring employers for discrimination against employees for their gender or sexual orientation, increasing minimum wage and making contractors eligible for overtime. Officer Who Killed Christian Taylor Was Rejected Twice Before Hired

Brad Miller was fired soon after fatally shooting Christian Taylor in a Classic Buick GMC dealership, but it turns out that he had to apply multiple times before being accepted into the force. First, Miller’s application expired after its submission date. Then Miller failed a physical exam on his second try. Miller was finally accepted into the force at 48-years-old after dieting and going on a fitness regimen. Miller killed Taylor after disobeying orders to wait for his more experienced partner to come onto the scene. Read more at The Root.

More Migrants Make Their Way To Europe, Countries Debate How Many Refugees To Accept Past Their Borders

Yesterday, the president of France, François Hollande, announced that he will be taking in 24,000 refugees over the next two years as his solution to the migration problems that have been plaguing Europe. Britain and Germany have also responded to the crisis, as Prime Minister David Cameron has said that he will take in 20,000 Syrian refugees while Chancellor Angela Merkel has promised to set aside $6.7 billion for the crisis. Migrants from Serbia continue to trek across Hungary’s borders, walking day and night and weathering cold temperatures to make it across highways, railroad tracks and razor-wire fences. Planned Parenthood has long supported the efforts of the Obama administration in providing healthcare benefits to women in marginalized communities. However, it is the very health care coverage that Obama designed and signed into law under the Affordable Care Act that is now making women less reliant on Planned Parenthood’s services. In clinics across states like New York, Texas, Ohio and Illinois, clinic managers are seeing drops in clientele as high as 15 percent in just the last three years. Read more at Reuters.
