Ashanti and Nelly are the culture’s favorite “spinnablock” couple, but this time their union may be causing shared controversy. Nelly is facing major backlash after announcing he’ll be performing at President Donald Trump’s 2025 inauguration.

Now Ashanti is getting pulled into the drama too.

Ashanti Caught In The Middle Of Trump-Nelly Inauguration Controversy

While Ashanti has remained silent, fans are lighting up her social media, flooding her posts with criticism about her husband’s decision. The couple, known for giving us ultimate #CoupleGoals vibes with their reunion, marriage, and baby news, is now facing scrutiny.

On a recent Instagram post, one fan wrote, “Love you sis but your man performing for Trump is crazy. Trump wouldn’t even rent to you and your family bc y’all Black but y’all are willing to accept his money for a shuck and jive? I would rather you and Nelly release albums, and our community will support you . You don’t have to turn to them for a check.” Another chimed in, “How yo man gonna perform for someone who is against women’s rights? .”

The backlash shows no signs of slowing down and is not limited to IG. X (formerly Twitter) is swarming with posts as fans threaten to boycott or unfollow the couple.

Overall, fans are tired of seeing their faves align with figures they feel don’t represent the community’s best interests. Despite his explanation, the “Country Grammar” rapper is deciding to align himself with one of the most polarizing figures in modern politics.

Nelly Defends Performing for Trump’s Inauguration On ‘Willie D’ podcast

Amid the uproar, Nelly addressed the controversy on the Willie D Live podcast on YouTube on January 19. The St. Louis rapper doubled down on his decision, calling it “an honor” and emphasizing that his performance isn’t about money. “I respect the office. It don’t matter who is in office,” he said.

Nelly even compared his concert to the sacrifices made by members of the military, adding, “The same way our men and women, our brothers and sisters who protect this country, have to go to war and have to put their life on the line for whoever is in office… I can d–mn sure perform for whoever is in office.”

He didn’t stop there. Nelly suggested that plenty of other celebrities and performers profit from political events – sometimes campaign – but escape the same criticism.

“He’s the president. He won,” he said bluntly.

Nelly isn’t the only artist catching heat. Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross, and Soulja Boy are also reportedly set to perform during Trump’s inauguration festivities.

Fans are questioning why some Black male rappers seem comfortable performing at such a politically-charged events. The growing criticism is sparking larger conversations about the role of artists in political spaces and how their choices reflect on the culture.

On the other side, prominent Black women in politics are making it clear where they stand. Michelle Obama and Representative Ayanna Pressley have both announced that they will not attend Trump’s inauguration.

According to the Associated Press, the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama released a statement confirming that while former President Barack Obama will attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies, Michelle will not.

Meanwhile, Congresswoman Pressley has chosen to skip the D.C. pomp an circumstance entirely, opting instead to focus on her home district in Massachusetts. She told NPR, “I plan to spend the weekend of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in my district at community events that feed our collective soul and re-commit us to building a future rooted in love.”
