Pastor Jamal Bryant's Target Boycott is Growing
Pastor Jamal Bryant’s Call To Boycott Target Over DEI Rollback Grows
New Birth’s Pastor Jamal Bryant’s call to boycott popular retailer Target after rolling back its DEI commitments is starting to gain major traction.
As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, a push to boycott the retail giant has gained major momentum since it announced the plan to discontinue its initiatives following the rollback of federal DEI programs by the Trump Administration.
So far, an online petition by Pastor Bryant has gained tens of thousands of signatures. Pastor Bryant took it a step further on February 2 in his sermon, calling for a 40-day “fast” of shopping at Target.
The fast doesn’t officially begin until March 5. However, Bryant says over 50,000 people have already committed to joining the movement.
“Historically, the Black church has always been the centerpiece of the civil rights movement,” he told FOX 5.
He adds that he wants Black consumers to take their power and dollars back in response to the recent attacks on DEI. Target is just the first of many retailers they plan to boycott.
“Black people spend on average $12 million a day in Target, so with that large of a consumption pie, we need to be treated with a great decibel of respect,” he stated. “It should be noted that since Feb. 1 the stock at target has dropped by $11.”

Consequences of Target’s Actions
Target, based in Minneapolis, was among many corporate retailers that pledged to implement DEI efforts following the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. Target created a program to help Black employees move up within the company, along with a $2 billion commitment to support Black-owned businesses in 2021.
Those plans came to an end earlier this month with the announcement to discontinue its diversity initiatives…and the move is already costing Target big time.
Target shareholders, led by the City of Rivera Beach Police Pension Fund in Florida, filed a class action lawsuit against the retailer, as reported by Forbes. Shareholders claim that Target is defrauding them by “artificially inflated” stock prices and misleading them about the risks of removing DEI policies.
