ATL's Downtown Connector Is Most "Soul-Searching" Road In GA
ATL’s Downtown Connector Named as Most “Soul-Searching” Road In GA

If you often find yourself contemplating life decisions while stuck in traffic in Downtown Atlanta…you are not alone.
A new poll by Potamkin Hyundai asked 3,004 drivers about the traffic-heavy highway that makes them rethink their whole lives. As reported by 11Alive, Atlanta’s I-85/I-75 Downtown Connector took the top spot in the state of Georgia, followed by I-285’s “Top End” Perimeter.
More from 11Alive:
It’s the ultimate Atlanta commuter test—a daily battle through over a dozen lanes of traffic, creeping past towering skyscrapers while debating whether it’s time to move to a small town. The Downtown Connector consistently ranks among the nation’s worst bottlenecks, and this poll confirms what locals already know: sitting in gridlock here makes you reconsider your job, mortgage, and maybe even your entire existence.
Designed to be a high-speed bypass, this stretch of I-285 becomes a slow-motion merry-go-round at rush hour. Between Spaghetti Junction and the Cobb Cloverleaf, drivers stew in multi-mile backups, wondering: Was that lower rent OTP really worth losing hours in traffic?
How ATL Traffic Compares To The Rest Of The U.S.
Despite the headaches from Atlanta traffic, it could be worse. You could be in traffic on the East Coast.
The top five “soul searching” traffic spots nationally are all in the NY/NJ area.
- I-95/New Jersey Turnpike (Newark to George Washington Bridge, NJ)
- I-495 Long Island Expressway (Queens & Long Island, NY)
- I-95 Cross Bronx Expressway (The Bronx, NY)
- I-278 Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE, NY)
- NJ-495 (Lincoln Tunnel Approach, NJ)
The moral of the story: Atlanta traffic is bad, and with the population growing, it will probably get worse. Therefore, make sure you leave early, have a playlist prepared, and be ready for those unexpected traffic jams.
