Lucy McBath Suspends GA Gubernatorial Bid

Congresswoman Lucy McBath announced Monday (Mar. 31) that she is suspending her bid to run for governor.
She confirmed in a statement to 11Alive that she is suspending her campaign to support her husband, who is battling cancer.
“I’m so grateful for the support my family has received as we undergo this difficult recovery. I will be spending this next period focusing on my husband’s recovery, and I cannot make the decision to run for Governor or not at this time.”

McBath filed paperwork to raise money for a possible gubernatorial run earlier this month, months after she won her congressional race in a redrawn district. A year ago, McBath shared minimal interest in running. “I’m flattered when people are encouraging me to do so, but I’m focused on this race right now,” she said.
Other Gubernatoral Candidates
Republican attorney general Chris Carr has already filed paperwork to fundraise for his own gubernatorial run next year. Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones, an early supporter of President Donald Trump, is also a likely candidate.
On the Democrat side, potential candidates include former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, former DeKalb CEO Michael Thurmond, and State Senator Jason Estevez (D-Atlanta).
